Fractures from trauma or biting that expose the inner tooth structure.

Exposed tooth structure vulnerable to decay and sensitivity.

Abscess or Infection

Swelling, fever, or pus indicating a serious dental infection.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Your actions in the first minutes after a dental emergency can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth. Here are general guidelines while you contact our office:

  • Knocked-out tooth: Hold by the crown (not root), rinse gently, and place in milk or saliva. Get to us within 30 minutes if possible.
  • Severe pain: Rinse with warm salt water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. Avoid aspirin directly on gums.
  • Cracked tooth: Rinse with warm water, apply cold compress to reduce swelling, and cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum.
  • Lost filling/crown: Keep the restoration if found. Apply dental cement or sugar-free gum to protect the exposed tooth temporarily.
  • Abscess: Do not pop or press on swelling. Rinse with mild salt water and call immediately — infections can spread rapidly.
